Malang, where the journey begins

Well, hello there. I’m back at writing my story for supporting my father’s tabloid. First of all, I’m not a good English writer but I’d love to share my story so here it goes. My father asked me to write about my college experiences.

It’s a long journey for me to get in college because I have to start studying social instead of my major in high school which it was nature science. But, my family and friends really supported me on this so I put a lot of work to be a Communication science student and here I am a communication science student in Brawijaya University.

Brawijaya University is located in Malang, East Java which means 870.0 kms away from my family, my friends, Depok, everything I have been living with since I was a little kid. That’s when the real journey begins.
Malang, most people would come up with ‘cold’ and ‘low-cost of living’. Those people we’re not completely wrong. Malang is cooler than Depok, obviously. I can’t tell whether the life’s cost in Malang is low or not because I have no idea how much it cost to live a day in Depok.

Anyway, Malang is a really beautiful city.  It has the crowded city parts but it’s also filled with a lot of beautiful scenery.  I have gone to two beaches already in Malang and both were really beautiful and peaceful, a perfect getaway from college stressful things.

My friends and I also traveled to very far village, two and a half hours motorcycle ride, to help their village’s development. I had to greet every people that I met in the village because courtesy is a part of the culture.

Malang people usually speak Javanesse with their medok accent so I’m starting to get used to with their language and their culture. I also found it’s really interesting that every time you hit the road you will see various codes of license plate that you haven’t seen or known that they existed before. I get to know a lot more cultures from all of my friends with different backgrounds and hometowns.

But, most of my close friends are from Jabodetabek, you just can’t resist that they’re home at the moment. Fortunately, I have my best friend in the same college and major. We’ve been together since elementary school so I’m excited to share another journey with my sister from another parent.

My best friend and I live in the same boarding house so it’s easier for us to help each other and make things as comfortable as we’re home. For me personally, it’s scary sometimes to think that you’re actually live alone in a room with none of your family member around. I’m not a really diligent person when it comes to house chores but now I have to think and manage everything for a living.

When should I do the laundry, what will I have for breakfast, how do I keep myself economical, where should I go if I want to repair my motorcycle, who should I call if I left important things anywhere. That’s a whole new level for me, my best friends, and all of my perantau fellows. But no matter how hard life gets, you’re never alone.

Being a college student brings a lot of me that I haven’t seen before. Every choice I make comes with a risk that I have to face whether I like it or not. I have to be prepared for everything that has something to do with my process in becoming a mature and better person. I have to set myself ready for the world especially I want my existence to be impactful in a good way for others.

Know which way to go and how to get there, what to focus on because a lot of things happen in college for example organization stuff that really keeps us busy. I always try to commit to myself to keep focus on doing good things, to live my life to the fullest, and to enjoy every second of my life.
I’m happy for Malang and everything that become parts of my journey because a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
